Alongside the River Colne, as it runs through Sible Hedingham, there is a section of land owned by the district council and set aside as a public open space.
This are has been turned into a riverside walk - an area of tranquil wildspace that can be enjoyed by all. To enable this, a group of people were originally brought together by the Parish Council, the Colne Valley Countryside Project - a District Council backed community initiative - and the Green Light Trust - a charity promoting community involvement in the local environment. The aim of this group is to manage the site on behalf of the community, creating an amenity that everyone can use, while maintaining a habitat for native plants and wildlife. The group is now in its second year.
The work of the Colne Valley Countryside Project has been taken on by Braintree District Council Landscape Services. Funding has been provided by the Essex County Council Community Initiative Fund.
This is the official website of the Hedingham Riverside Walk steering group. It is where announcements of events to take place on the riverside and news of developments at the site will be made. These events are likely to be community volunteer working parties - to maintain the site - and educational events for local school children.
Wheelchair access to the site is by RADAR key through the gate at the entrance on Summerfields. Paths are narrow and uneven in places. At the current time it is not possible to access all of the site with a wheel chair.
